BIANCO-VALENTE / MASS: “SELF ORGANIZING STRUCTURES”

curated by sybin – susanna bianchini

One Night Only

For the first time in London and for one night only, a not to be missed chance to see the work of the most representative duo for Italian contemporary video art: Giovanna Bianco and Pino Valente, introduced by the young curator sybin (Susanna Bianchini), present a 33 minutes video titled Self Organizing Structures, accompanied by the sound specifically created for it by the electronic musician Mario Masullo, aka Mass.

Bianco-Valente are fascinated by the dualism between the body, a flesh organic structure, finite and dependent on space and time, and the mind, carried about by it, a spontaneous phenomenon without visible boundaries, totally free and self-referential. They try to understand if and where it is possible to locate a point of contact linking the two domains indivisibly, the material and the immaterial. Therefore, their imaginary visions have no beginning and no end, looking like dreams or psychedelic hallucinations, always challenging the viewer’s attempt to find something recognizable and questioning the qualities of the electronic images, which seems to be so close to the instability of mental images.

Among their many works, Self Organizing Structures (2003) is a sort of summary of all Bianco-Valente’s poetics, further expanding the artist’s interest towards the flourishing field of Electronic Music developed by their fellow citizen, Mass in particular. The profitable collaboration produced an elegant box with the video DVD and the CD, easily purchasable on the internet. Self Organizing Structures was successfully presented in a live performance at the 48.Venice Biennale of Contemporary Music (2008), the Moderna Museet Stockholm (2007), the Auditorium in Rome during the Rome European Festival (2003) and the MACBA in Barcelona, in occasion of Sonar (2004).

pastime (English): noun;
syllable division: pas-time; plural: pas-times;
something done to pass one's time in a pleasant way.

My favourite pastime/London explores the role that theatricality plays in video in a series of staged performances that examine the way in which a shift in context can alter the viewer’s perception and understanding of an art work. At the same time it recalls the conception of art as l´art-pour-l´art, a philosophy that claims the intrinsic value of art as the only "true" art, divorced from any didactic, moral, or utilitarian function.

Screening time 60 mins

Both programmes will be screened consecutively with a brief introduction by the curators. Curated by Kathrin Becker. Head of Video Forum, Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k) in association with David Thorp.
